On Feburary 12, 2008 in Riga Miniser of Foreign Affairs Maris Riekstins sent a letter of condolence to Annette Lantos, widow of Congressman Tom Lantos.
Below is the text of the letter:
May I extend my deepest condolences to you and your family at the passing away of your spouse.
Tom Lantos has tirelessly defended the values of truth, human dignity and civil liberties. Tom Lantos was also well known in the whole world for his devotion to shed the light into the darkest period of the 20th century thus raising greater awareness of the crimes committed by Nazi and Communism regimes.
I am convinced the people of Latvia will always remember his tremendous efforts to assist Latvia’s integration to the Euro-Atlantic community.
We are proud to be an ally of the United States and we will continue to support all endeavours that foster the peace and security in sharing our experience with other nations that are ready and willing to defend the values of freedom and democracy.
At this saddest moment, please accept my profound sympathy for this grievous loss.
Sharing your sorrow,
Maris Riekstins
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia
