Meeting of Latvia's Honorary Consuls in the US held at the Embassy

On December 7, 2007 the Embassy of Latvia organized a meeting of Latvia’s Honorary Consuls in the US. Honorary Consuls John Medveckis (Pennsylvania), Jeffery A. Yarchever (California), Barry Mowell (Florida), Roger Anderson (Connecticut), Karlis Steinmanis (Ohio), Stephen Lee Zirschky (Washington State) travelled to Washington, DC to attend the meeting. Sandija Bayot represented Stephen Payne (Texas) and Ahmet Oren (New York).

The meeting was also attended by high-level members of the US Administration - Judith Garber, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State; Adam Sterling, Director of Central and Eastern European Affairs, National Security Council (NSC); Keith Anderton, Deputy Director of the Office of Nordic and Baltic Affairs, Department of State and Carol Werner, Baltic Desk Officer, Department of State.

During the meeting, the participants discussed Latvia-US cooperation in 2007, as well as prospects for future cooperation. Looking ahead to 2008, Latvia’s Ambassador Andrejs Pildegovics invited the honorary consuls to consider organizing a variety of cultural activities in conjunction with the 90th anniversary of Latvia’s independence proclamation.

The participants were briefed on current events regarding Latvia’s domestic and foreign policy. Representatives from the US administration commended Latvia’s progress toward meeting criteria regarding the visa-waiver program.
