The Embassy of Latvia announces that 1487 voters in the U.S. participated in Latvia’s 9th Saeima (Parliamentary) elections. Eligible voters with a valid Latvian passport were able to cast their vote on October 7th at 9 polling stations in the U.S. It was also possible to register to vote in advance by mail. The largest voter turnouts were in Chicago, New York and Washington, DC. Votes cast by mail were included in the Washington, DC final vote count. The majority of voters in the U.S. voted for “New Era” (Jaunais Laiks) – 828 votes, followed by “Union for Motherland and Freedom/Latvian National Independence Movement” (TB/LNNK) with 349 votes, and “People’s Party” (Tautas Partija) with 133. 74 voted for “Green and Farmer’s Union” (ZZS), 36 for “Latvia’s First Party and Latvia’s Way Union” (LPP/LC), 15 for “Harmony Center” (SC) and “Everything for Latvia” (Visu Latvijai). No votes were cast for the political organization “Euroskeptics”, the “Motherland Union” (Tçvzemes savienîba), “Latvian Latvia” (Latvieđu Latviju) or the Social Justice Party (Sociâlâ Taisnîguma Partija).
