President Zatlers concludes US visit

On the final day of his working visit to the US (April 4), President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers was in Chicago. The focus of his visit was to promote cooperation between Latvian and US companies.

President Zatlers met with top management at the Abbott Laboratories pharmaceutical firm to discuss the possibility of joint projects with Latvian counterparts. The President also met with representatives from Walgreens, a leading US purveyor of food, pharmaceuticals, household goods and hygiene products to discuss opportunities to sell Latvian products in their stores. Representatives of several Latvian companies – Advaita, Pure Chocolate, Bio2You, Lacu Maize, Madara, and Wuff It! –were present for the meeting.

Another purpose of the President’s working visit was to speak to energy sector companies about investment opportunities in Latvia. He met with Andris Cukurs, executive director of the Suzlon Wind Energy company, which manufactures wind generators and related products, offering sales and servicing of such technologies all around the world. President Zatlers offered the company’s representatives a review of the development of Latvia's energy sector, inviting them to take a look at the establishment of wind generator parks in the Baltic Sea near Latvia’s coastline.

Business contacts with companies in Chicago and Illinois were also the key topic of discussion for President Zatlers when he met with Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. The President informed them about business advantages in Latvia and about ways of promoting investments in our country. The mayor and the governor were particularly interested in Latvia’s ports, as well as the energy market.
