On November 1, 2007 in Washington, DC Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis met with Mr. Clay Sell, Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Energy.
Prime Minister Kalvitis noted: „The main objective of the development of Latvia’s energy sector is to ensure a stable, flourishing and sustainable national economy. Therefore it is essential to integrate Latvia into the energy network of the European Union (EU) and to create links with the transatlantic space.”
Mr. Kalvitis emphasised that the transatlantic partnership should pay increased attention to the area of recoverable energy resources, energy safety and efficiency in view of contribution of the EU and the USA to the G8, operations of the International Energy Agency and other cooperation processes.
During the meeting the Prime Minister pointed out the successful organization of the Energy Conference in June of this year in Riga, which was arranged in close cooperation with the Baltic States and the USA.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the development of cooperation between Latvia and the USA in economy and energy, and noted that Latvia is interested in attracting U.S. investments, in particular in the energy sector.
Also during his Washington visit, Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis met with the President and other representatives of GE Money, with the President of the German Marshall Fund, with the Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and with the head of the National Intelligence Service.
