President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga was in Washington to address the Joint Meeting of the 109th Congress. The speech took place on Wednesday, June 7, 2006. On June 8, at the White House the President met with President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney. The President also met with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other U.S. government officials. While in Washington the President presented Peter Weitz Journalism awards at the German Marshall Foundation's 7th Annual event. Prior to her visit to Washington, President Vike-Freiberga was in California, where she participated in the annual Academy of Achievement Summit in Los Angeles. On June 3 the President met with the Latvian community of Southern California.
