President of Latvia meets with President Bush in Riga

President of Latvia met with President George W. Bush at the Presidential Castle in Riga on November 28, 2006. President Bush is in Riga for the NATO Summit. During his visit to Riga, President Bush also presented remarks at the University of Latvia.

During the meeting with President Bush, the President of Latvia highlighted the US role in transatlantic relations as well as expressed the appreciation of the role of the United States in the non-recognition of the incorporation of Latvia in the USSR. President Vike-Freiberga acknowledged US support in Latvia's reforms after restoration of independence.

George W. Bush congratulated Latvia on hosting the NATO Summit and stressed its historic importance in NATO transformation and development.

During the meeting the parties discussed a wide range of issues in relation to the NATO agenda, including the current developments of the Alliance – the future of peace-keeping missions in Afghanistan, prospects of the enlargement of the Alliance and energy security.

Regarding bilateral relations, the President of Latvia mentioned that following George Bush's earlier visit to Riga in May 2005, the volume of trade between Latvia and the US has increased by 30%. The US President confirmed that he understands Latvia's position regarding the visa-waiver regime and is preparing to submit a bill to the US Congress that would revise the existing criteria for ëasing visa restrictions between Latvia and the US.
