President of Latvia meets President George W. Bush

On Thursday, June 8, 2006 at the White House President Vaira Vike-Freiberga met with President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney. The President of Latvia discussed current issues in Latvia-US relations; her June 7 speech at the Joint Session of Congress; the NATO Summit in Riga, as well as other issues relating to energy and international relations.

The American leaders expressed their appreciation regarding the President's address to Congress; in turn, Vaira Vike-Freiberga expressed her gratitude for the honor to address American elected representatives and the American public.

The situation in Iraq was also discussed, as well as issues related to the fight against terrorism.

The President also discussed Latvia's relations with Russia, and Latvia's interest in forming a forward-looking pragmatic relationship with Russia.
