President Zatlers on working visit to Washington

On April 23 during his working visit to the United States, President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers met with Senator Richard Lugar and confirmed to him Latvia's readiness to provide support to Ukraine and Georgia on their way to joining NATO.

In meeting with Senator Lugar, President Zatlers discussed the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), as well as the results of the NATO summit in Bucharest.

President Zatlers, along with First Lady Lilita Zatlere participated in the commemorative ceremony of laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Later, the president laid flowers at the Victims of Communism Memorial.

President Zatlers also spoke at the Heritage Foundation (see separate news item).

Finally, the President and Mrs. Zatlere participated in a reception at the Latvian Embassy in Washington.

President Zatlers will be in Washington through Friday.
