During a visit to the United States, Minister of Interior Ivars Godmanis discussed cooperation in combatting organized crime and fraud with US officials.
During a visit to the Secret Service, the Minister and his delegation were briefed on the latest achievements in fighting cybercrimes.
While meeting with colleagues at US security agencies, officials also discussed how to improve cooperation among institutions in combating crime and terrorism.
During the visit, the Latvian delegation met with FBI vice-director John S. Pistole and FBI anti-terrorism and money laundering experts. The Latvian interior minister asked for assistance in improving the analytic work of the Latvian police and in training them in the prevention of fraud and money laundering.
The Latvian delegation is also scheduled to meet with National Intelligence chief John Michael McConnell, and Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff.
The Latvian delegation currently visiting the US includes Interior Minister Godmanis, deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Interior Ilze Petersone, Head of the Security Police Janis Reiniks and Anti-Terrorism Center vice-director Normunds Mezviets.
