Mara Bergmane of Latvia a finalist at Geotourism Challenge Summit

Mara Bergmane, Founder of Eco-Health farms in Latvia, was selected as one of 15 worldwide finalists in the 2008 Geotourism Challenge Competition. The Geotourism Challenge was held at the National Geographic Society in Washington, DC October 14-16, 2008.

The Geotourism Challenge Summit provides an opportunity for geotourism experts, practitioners and representatives from funding institutions and foundations to discuss ways to advance the global geotourism agenda.

Ms. Mara Bergmane and her family run the "Upmali" Eco-Health Organic Farm, located near Kuldiga, Latvia. By preserving national traditions, health maintenance services and showing other small, organic farms how to operate successfuly, Ms. Bergmane is promoting the family farm model, which is increasingly threatened due to modernization and mass culture.

Mara Bergmane is an Ashoka Foundation fellow, dedicated to building a network of "Health Farms" in Latvia.
