On August 23, 2009 a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and the 20th Anniversary of "The Baltic Way" took place in Washington, DC.

At 11:00 a.m. participants gathered at the Embassy of Lithuania, where Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian diplomats addressed the public and then watched a live broadcast of commemorative events from Vilnius. Together they sang the "Baltic Way" song (which was originally sung in 1989) in Latvian, Estonian and Lithuanian.

After that over 200 participants walked to "Embassy Row" (Massachusetts Avenue, NW) where, under the organization of JBANC (the Joint American Baltic National Committee), everyone took part in the reenactment of the symbolic human chain. For 10 minutes friends and supporters of the Baltics joined hands between the embassies of Latvia and Estonia.

In cooperation with the American Latvian Association a reception was held at the Latvian Embassy, where guest had the opportunity to view "The Soviet Story." In a show of solidarity, many later continued on to the Embassy of Georgia.
