Ambassador sends greeting to Reno, Nevada Historical Commission

Ambassador Maris Riekstins has sent his greetings to the Reno Historical Resources Commission, which has dedicated a plaque honoring Jacob Davis, a 19th century immigrant from Latvia. Mr. Davis was the inventor of the copper rivet to secure the pockets of work pants, which became Levi's blue jeans.

Mr. Davis was born in Riga, Latvia in 1831, immigrated to the United States and, after moving to Reno, Nevada in 1868 began tailoring fine clothes. He invented the copper rivet in 1871 in Reno. Davis approached Levi Strauss as a business partner, and on May 20, 1873, a patent was granted.

On May 20, 2006 a historic marker was placed at the location of Jacob Davis's tailor shop on the West side of Virginia Street (between 2nd and Commercial Row) in Reno, Nevada.
