Ambassador participates in Victims of Communism commemoration ceremony

On June 16, 2009 Ambassador Andrejs Pildegovics participated in events commemorating Victims of Communism. The Ambassador placed a wreath at the Memorial in Washington, DC. This year's events are especially symbolic, since they commemorate 20 years since the fall of the "Iron Curtain."

An international commemoration ceremony was held at the Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington. Representatives from over 20 countries and international organizations placed wreaths in memory of those who suffered under Communist rule.

On Capitol Hill a ceremony of the Truman-Reagan Medal of Freedom was held. This award is presented to international heroes of freedom and democracy.

A unique project - the virtual Global Museum on Communism - was also unveiled. The Latvian Government has provided support to this project.

The Global Museum on Communism is an international portal created to honor the more than 100 million victims of communist tyranny and educate future generations about past and present communist atrocities. The first of its kind, the online museum offers an accurate history of communism, and an interface for victims and their families to tell their stories.
