Ambassador hosts reception for Capitol Hill staffers

On June 15, 2006, the Embassy hosted a reception for staff from U.S. Congressmen and Senators' offices. In addressing the guests Ambassador Maris Riekstins spoke about the history of the Latvian state, highlighting the policy of non-recognition implemented by the United States, and discussing Latvia's political and economic development and cooperation between both countries.

Ambassador Riekstins emphasized that the opportunity provided to the Latvian President to address the joint meeting of the US Congress on June 7 was an honor for both President Vaira Vike-Freiberga and for Latvia.

In his address, the Ambassador drew particular attention to the visa issue, noting that it is currently the only question in bilateral relations which has not yet been resolved. The amendment in the Immigration Bill passed by the U.S. Senate has opened the way to political discussions. Ambassador Riekstins called on his guests to draw the attention of their congressmen and senators to this issue and noted that active work on the settlement of this matter would be continued.

The guests were provided with a brief insight into the history of the Alice Pike Barney building, which now hosts the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia.
